Damien Kerrigan
International Baccalaureate Coordinator
International School of Western Australia
Eleven of my 18 years of teaching has been undertaken in international schools. I have taught in Vancouver, Istanbul, San Francisco and Phnom Penh. I have been working with Diploma students and the International Baccalaureate since 1997, so I have a depth of experience to draw from. In addition to this I am an examiner and a workshop leader for the IBO. Although these additional commitments require a good deal of time, they enable me to maintain a strong contemporary understanding of the program.
My attraction to the International School of Western Australia (ISWA) from the very outset was the potential for change that I could see. ISWA represents a model of education that is rare for Perth and relatively rare for Australia. Not only does ISWA offer a close teacher to student ratio it is also a truly international environment, allowing the students to forge closer ties with students in other countries than they are likely to establish with those that live in their own backyard. While the International Baccalaureate is experiencing phenomenal growth across Australia, there are only a handful of schools that offer the program in an entirely international environment. I can see that this makes us unique and therefore a more exciting place to be involved with.
