English as a

Second Language

At ISWA, English is the language of instruction and integral to all subject areas, both inside and outside the classroom. While we encourage families to value and maintain their own native cultures and languages, we strongly advise propspective families to gain as much English language instruction as possible before arrival.

With better English language skills, new students find it easier to immerse themselves into school life. Without a doubt, this ensures a smoother transition into their new environment academically, socially and emotionally.

Prospective students who do not have English as their first language should attend intensive English language courses or have tutoring as soon as possible before entering ISWA. Often families have small group instruction together, which provides very positive outcomes and attitudes. Many students will have had regular English language classes whilst at their current school. Even so, these students are encouraged to have extra tutoring.

Parents/Guardians will be asked about their child's level of English during the enrolment process. Each child's current tutor or course teacher should be able to help assess the level to allow Parents/Guardians to accurately inform staff at ISWA.

Upon arrival, students will be informally interviewed to assess their level of English language. The four language areas of Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening will be assessed. Those students requiring extra support will spend the majority of their time in their regular year level class. However, they will also be required to attend English as a Second Language (ESL) lessons at ISWA three times a week, until a level of proficiency is reached that is equivalent to the required year group level. ESL students receive 3.5 hours of instruction per week within small groups at an extra cost to Parents/Guardians.

During the first days of school, Parents/Guardians will be given ideas as to how to help their children learn English while living in Perth. In the meantime, it is essential that prospective students have as much English language instruction as possible before arrival.
