National Honor Society

The National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are organisations established in 1921 and 1929 to recognise outstanding upper and middle school students. NHS is more than just academic recognition. The ISWA NHS chapter has established guidelines for selection of members that is based upon a candidate’s outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership and character.
At ISWA NHS members need to acquire and maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 85%, B, 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) to meet scholarship requirements. Also required by NHS is that each member continue to develop and strengthen their skills in the areas of leadership, character and service.
To be actively and regularly involved in service to the community, members of NHS and NJHS at ISWA are required to complete a minimum of 4 hours community service each month of the academic calendar. If a member wishes to participate in a service activity outside those organised by the group, prior approval must be received from the Academic Advisor.
Any student who does not meet the GPA or service hour requirements may be put on probation membership or eventually lose membership if they are unable to improve. GPA’s will be checked regularly by the Academic Advisor and new members will be invited to join each semester.
