At ISWA, our youngest students are presented with opportunities to learn and express themselves in a variety of ways – we put a significant emphasis on student agency and our staff have developed programmes and learning spaces that facilitate play-based and inquiry-based learning.

Our Early Childhood Learning Programmes are the ideal blend of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) and the Australian Government Early Years Learning Framework. The PYP is well suited to learning in the Early Childhood Years (K-2) – preparing students for the intellectual challenges of school and developing the whole child as an inquirer both in and out of the classroom. By undertaking the PYP from Kindergarten, independent learning skills, strong personal values, emotional well-being, and global mindedness are nurtured in your children at a time when their development is most active.

Outside of the PYP, our Early Childhood students benefit from specialist programmes in Music, Languages, Art, Drama and Physical Education, a strong focus on second language acquisition, and a number of exciting and engaging excursions, making learning fun.

ISWA Kindergarten develops happy, resilient and confident learners

Our Kindergarten students are welcomed into a warm, nurturing environment, where they are supported to take responsible risk and build resilience. Students are engaged in nature-based play and exploration, empowering them to learn independently and engage with their teachers and peers. At ISWA, we run our Kindergarten program five days a week (8.30am – 2.45pm with after-school care arrangements) – a benefit for both our parents and our youngest children.

“The benefits of attending Kindergarten five days a week means that there is more time for a wide range of inquiry-based learning and more occasions for good quality interactions between teachers and students. Children become more familiar with the routine of school and get a deeper sense of belonging, which makes Kindergarten and Pre-Primary a more positive experience”

Pre-Primary to Year 2 at ISWA – flexible learning spaces, play-based inquiry learning

Young children are full of curiosity, and have their own ideas about the world, their strengths and passions. At ISWA, our flexible learning spaces allow our students to think for themselves, working independently and collaboratively, in an environment where they feel confident. Our classrooms, and our carefully planned teaching and learning activities, are designed to facilitate play-based inquiry learning – we encourage students to create, explore, self-initiate and imagine, enabling them to explore concepts within the context of their own interests, and to respond to teacher-driven provocations.

We appreciate just how important Early Learning is to your child – it forms the basis for future learning and growth. The inquiry method of teaching and learning develops the skills of thinking, research, self-management and communication in our students – social and academic skills which are incredibly valuable to your child. Our incredible teachers are tuned in to your child’s unique needs, while letting them discover themselves. We provide regular and ongoing feedback about the development of your child and put a strong emphasis on the relationship between our school and parents – our ISWA families are actively involved, which we believe has a large impact on out students’ happiness, well-being and success in learning.
