Middle Years (7-10)
Middle School at the International School of Western Australia is a time of growth for our students. In our close-knit, welcoming school environment they develop academic and personal skills, and a deep sense of social awareness and justice.
Our students study the IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Years 7-10 of our Secondary School.
The Middle Years Programme is a concept-driven, inquiry-based framework that ensures the development of a rigorous curriculum. The MYP exposes students to as many different subjects, skills, and experiences as possible so that students will learn to see knowledge as a whole. The focus on higher-order thinking skills provides students with opportunities to develop interdisciplinary and intercultural understanding as they explore real-world issues.
Students are also taught to embody the IB Learner Profile that encourages them to be thinkers, inquirers, caring, communicators, principled, reflective, open-minded, risk-takers, knowledgeable, and balanced.
Curriculum and Subjects
At ISWA, the MYP content is outlined by the Australian Curriculum and The School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA). The MYP philosophy, learning approaches and assessments are outlined by the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP).
The MYP is structured around eight subject areas of;
Health and Physical Education
All subject areas are compulsory attendance from Year 7 – 10.
Service and Action
Service and Action (learning by doing and experiencing) an integral part of MYP; such as the MYP personal project. Students take action when they apply what they are learning in the classroom and beyond. Students initiative service by demonstrating a commitment of making a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment.
