Communities, Connectedness & Why They Matter
30 August 2025
Harmony Day was a wonderful way to finish off our term. It really is the most joyful and special day of our year, and we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped make it such a spectacular celebration.
Our campus was buzzing with colour, food, music, and stories, as we came together to share traditions and celebrate the incredible diversity that makes up our ISWA community.
As Dr. Brokvam noted in her opening remarks during the Harmony Ceremony, ‘Where are you from?’ is often a hard question for many of us at an international school to answer. For those who move around the world, where is home?
Yesterday, our community answered these questions.
We are from many places, and our home is where we can celebrate our cultures, laugh with our friends, feel the love of our families, and share that love with our community. That love is baked into our food, it is sewn into our traditional costumes, written into our folklore. The drumbeat to our dances and our songs. Yesterday, ISWA was home to the world.
Thank you to our community for showing every day that at ISWA, Everyone Belongs & Diversity is our strength. Here is an excerpt from Lexie (Year 2)’s speech on what Harmony means to her:
“Harmony Day is when we all recognise everyone’s different and unique cultures and celebrate them. All of us are citizens of planet Earth. This means we should all live in harmony, and we should all have equal rights. When we celebrate Harmony Day, we should respect and recognise everyone’s culture, celebrations and what they do.
I come from a diverse background myself. I am Scottish, Japanese and Malaysian Chinese. I feel lucky that I get to celebrate two major celebrations like Christmas and the Lunar New Year, and we celebrate with happiness and joy.
I feel truly blessed and grateful to learn in a school with such a diverse group of students. We have 19 nationalities in my class alone. Every day we share and learn from one another, and that is truly special.”
