Language Learning
‘With languages, you are at home anywhere.’ Edmund de Waal.
Language is deeply connected to identity and shapes how we experience the world. As an International Baccalaureate school with a multilingual community, language acquisition is central to our curriculum.
At ISWA we believe that language learning promotes international-mindedness and open-mindedness and helps us to understand and appreciate differing perspectives. From Kindergarten through Year 12, students have the opportunity to learn French or Spanish, developing skills that foster communication, cultural understanding, and lifelong learning.
Primary Years Programme (Kindergarten – Year 6)
In the Primary Years Programme, language is learned through the medium of inquiry.
- French: Offered from Kindergarten to Year 6, three sessions per week
- Spanish: Offered from Year 1 to Year 6, three sessions per week
Middle Years Programme (Years 7 – 10)
In the Middle Years Programme, French and Spanish are integral to the curriculum. Language classes are tailored to each student’s ability, ensuring personalised growth. ISWA offers five phase levels, from Phase 1 (emergent learner) to Phase 5 (proficient learner)
Diploma Programme (Years 11 – 12)
In the Diploma Programme, students continue to refine their linguistic skills with courses at both Standard and Higher Levels, including:
- Spanish Ab Initio (SL)
- Spanish B (HL/SL)
- French B (HL/SL)
